How to be happier (even in a pandemic)

We all want to be happy. Most of us have room to be happier.

When we’re happy, our heart feels full. We feel lighter. We’re more at ease and things generally feel easier. We feel less challenged and more in flow. 

Happiness is a choice—one which some would argue is, at times, a hard choice. At times, it’s a choice that doesn’t seem available.

How can you be happier, even in a pandemic?

By taking time to decipher, what Robert Holden, Ph.D. calls, your Sacred Yeses. 

A Sacred Yes is something that takes precedence in your life. It’s something you’re serious about, is important to you and you’re committed to. These are your nonnegotiables.

At the same time, as Robert says, “A strong sense of “Yes” helps to build a strong sense of “No” to what is not important and not true.” You stop saying “yes” then regretting you did. You stop over-committing then resenting yourself and others. 

Your Sacred Yeses grow and change with you so it’s worth re-examining them from time to time.

For instance, a few or all of your Sacred Yeses pre-pandemic may be very different from what they are now or will be a year from now. 

Once you know your Sacred Yeses, you can make choices that align with them. 

For instance, one of my Sacred Yeses is travel. Travelling rejuvenates me because it feeds my sense of curiosity. It heightens my intuition and broadens my perspective. It makes me feel alive. It feels more than a luxury; it feels like a soul calling. Therefore, I’ve created my business in a way that allows me to travel with it therefore I can travel longer. It’s so important to me that I often travel alone rather than putting it off until I can find someone to go with me.

Knowing that travel is one of my Sacred Yes, I can easily decide how I want to save and spend my money. Even in this year of stay-at-home, it still helps steer my choices in both my personal and professional life because it’s not a fleeting “yes”. It’s a “Yes” with a capital Y and I’m committed to it. It may not be my Sacred Yes five years from now, but it’s a Sacred Yes now and has been for years. 

Perhaps optimal health is a Sacred Yes for you. Knowing it’s a Sacred Yes and having it in your conscious awareness will help you make healthy food choices, chase away guilt when you feel you should be working but your body and mind are craving a walk (which will clear your mind and reenergize you), help you decide if, who, how and when you meet up with friends these days, how many hours of sleep you get (set the alarm or wake up naturally?)…  

The more you’re aware of and make choices that align with your Sacred Yeses, the happier you’ll be, because a Sacred Yes comes from your heart. And when your heart is happy, so are you.
